Ah yes, the ever-coveted blue tick next to your username. You know the one; that icon that signals ‘you’ve made it!’, that you have been verified, and are up-to-scratch.
Alas, it’s not actually the work of a fairy godmother, although it might have felt that way in the past. Instagram is now very clear as to how—and why—verification is possible, having introduced the ability for users to request verification from Instagram directly. Application is open to everyone, whether you have a personal or business account.
Firstly, we should discuss why verification exists at all. Across all social networks who have instigated verification status, the common reason for verification was not, in fact, done to create hierarchy or prominent status. Instead, it was introduced to signify account authenticity—essentially, to confirm that you are who you say you are. This is particularly important when it comes to celebrities and prominent influencers such as the Caribbean’s own Machel Montano or Alison Hinds. The verification symbol certifies that the user has located a legitimate account, rather than a fan-made or fraudulent one.
While there is value in anyone being verified, verification was actually only really designed for those who are famous or—at the very least—important enough to be subject to impersonation. In fact, Instagram states “only Instagram accounts that have a high likelihood of being impersonated have verified badges.” Verification provides the follower with the assurance that they are indeed following their intended person or global brand. Largely speaking, that little blue tick is to protect those who have the most followers, greatest reach, and the most to lose from being imitated or exploited.
However, being verified helps to increase awareness of your brand and to build trust with your audience. It proves that you are newsworthy and provides an air of exclusivity. It also gives you access to special features which can often help monetise your account. Finally, it protects you from identity theft on the network.
So, now that we have dealt with the why, let’s move on to the how. It’s actually very simple to request Instagram verification. However, that doesn’t mean that every application is successful. Instagram is clear that “verified badges help people more easily find the public figures, celebrities and brands they want to follow,” and states that verification “has confirmed that an account is the authentic presence of the public figure, celebrity or global brand it represents.”
Furthermore, aside from the account being in good standing, (i.e. following Instagram’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines), the account must also be authentic, unique, complete, and notable. But, what does Instagram mean by ‘notable’? Well, the person or brand must be well-known, highly searched for, and featured in multiple news sources—paid or promotional content does not count! Instagram is clear that it is up to them to decide who is deemed a public figure, celebrity or global brand.
Nevertheless, there is no harm in trying, it only takes a few minutes. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the Instagram app and navigate to your profile
- Tap the menu icon in the upper right-hand corner of your profile
- Click the “Settings” gear icon at the bottom of your screen, then select ‘Account’ from the menu
- Scroll down and tap “Request Verification”
- Fill out your details and upload a photo of your ID (or a legal or business ID if you have an Instagram for Business account)
- Press the blue “Send” button
Before you apply though, there is one thing you really should do—become a prominent influencer on other social platforms. Instagram will be more likely to verify you if you are actually present (and thus verifiable) across other social networks.
Aside from being a top influencer, here are some more tips to improve your chances:
- Cross-promote—be sure to mention your Instagram account on your website, other profiles and any other communications
- Really try to build followers and increase your engagement
- Be consistent in your messaging, imagery, and general brand aesthetic
- Ensure that your user name is constant across all channels
- Use popular hashtags to increase your visibility
- Consider the timing of your posts so that they achieve maximum reach
- Big-up your connections to other verified accounts
While it is undoubtedly hard to get verified on Instagram, it’s not necessarily impossible. So, if you are unsuccessful on your first attempt, don’t worry! Just keep building your following, engaging your followers, and try out our aforementioned tips. The next time you apply, you just might find that Instagram awards you that coveted blue badge!
